The UPV/EHU University of the Basque Country/Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea is the main institution of higher education and the only public one in the Basque Country. Its wide range of studies covers all areas of knowledge and is responsible for more than 60% of the research that is carried out in the Basque Country. All of this is complemented by a broad range of cultural and sports activities, most of which are open to all citizens.

More than 55,000 people attend daily the classrooms, laboratories and offices of the three campuses, one in each historical region, to learn, teach or carry out their professional work. Spanish and Basque are the two working languages, in addition to English, which is gradually becoming more widespread. Furthermore, a cross-border campus has been launched in cooperation with the University of Bordeaux, unique in Europe, and it also leads the Latin American network of post-graduate studies, made up of universities from twelve countries.
